This high-rise riverside development in Central London includes residential towers, commercial space, and landscaped public areas. Due to the scale and location, the project required a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We were appointed to prepare the Noise and Vibration Chapter of the Environmental Statement (ES) to support the planning submission.

London High Rise building proposed that required a noise ES chapter as part of the EIA Environmental Impact Assessment. We assessed the likely impacts under BS 8233, BS 4142, BS 5228 and the IEMA Guidelines for Environmental Noise Impact Assessment.

Our Role in the EIA Process

As acoustic consultants, we assessed how noise and vibration could affect local residents and future occupants. Our work formed a critical part of the planning submission. It ensured the development met local and national acoustic standards as part of the noise assessment chapter of the Environmental Statement.

Baseline Noise Assessment for the Environmental Statement

We carried out long-term noise monitoring at key locations around the site. This data provided a clear picture of the existing sound environment. It included day, evening, and night-time measurements to reflect varied site conditions.

Construction Noise and Vibration Assessment for Environmental Statement

Using BS 5228, we predicted the impact of construction activities on nearby homes and offices. We modelled noise from plant, equipment, and demolition phases. To reduce impact, we proposed clear mitigation strategies such as quiet methods and noise barriers. We also assessed vibration risks from piling and heavy machinery.

Operational Noise Assessment for Environmental Statement

We analysed how the finished development would affect the surrounding area. This included noise from building services, deliveries, and public activity. We used 3D noise modelling to test compliance with BS 8233, BS 4142, WHO, and local planning guidance.

Internal Noise and Façade Design

We recommended glazing and façade performance to meet internal sound standards. This ensures comfort for future residents and supports Approved Document O where applicable.

Cumulative Impact

We also considered how noise from nearby developments could combine with this one. This ensured a fair and realistic assessment of total impact of noise and vibration.

Clear, Compliant Deliverables

Our team provided:

  • A fully scoped Noise and Vibration Chapter
  • A concise summary of predicted impacts
  • A mitigation strategy aligned with EIA guidance
  • Input for the Non-Technical Summary (NTS)

The Outcome

The Environmental Statement was accepted without objection to noise or vibration. This helped the planning process move forward without delay. Our advice supported both compliance and good acoustic design.

The Client’s Benefit

✅ Faster planning approval
✅ Fewer design changes later
✅ Safer, quieter living environments
✅ A clearer path through the EIA process
