Our team provided full acoustic consultancy for a new-build, four-storey apartment development in the heart of Hammersmith, West London. As an experienced acoustic consultant in Hammersmith, we tackled significant challenges at the site, which is located just off the A4 (Hammersmith Flyover)—one of London’s busiest roads. The site presented significant challenges in terms of road traffic noise for the future residents of the proposed scheme.
Client: Residential Property Developer
Job: Noise Impact Assessment for Planning Application
Location: Hammersmith, London, W6
Completed: 2025
Main Concern: Road traffic noise from the A4 (Hammersmith Flyover)
Outcome: Approved

Acoustic Challenges
The proximity of the new apartments to the A4 meant that noise from heavy traffic, including frequent HGVs and buses, posed a major concern for indoor living quality and external amenity spaces. Compliance with BS 8233:2014 required the expertise of an experienced Hammersmith acoustic consultant.
Our Solution
- Baseline Noise Survey:
We conducted a detailed environmental noise survey on-site, measuring day and night-time levels to fully understand the noise profile from the A4. - Façade Design & Glazing Specification:
Acoustic calculations determined the required sound insulation performance for all façades. We specified enhanced glazing (up to Rw 43 dB where required), acoustically treated ventilators, and continuous seals to all window and door units facing the main road. - Internal Layout Optimisation:
Living and sleeping areas were strategically located on the quieter side of the building where possible. Service spaces (bathrooms, corridors) were positioned as buffer zones along the noisier façade. - Ventilation Strategy:
To maintain acoustic integrity, we recommended a whole-house mechanical ventilation system with high-performance acoustic attenuation, allowing residents to keep windows closed and still achieve excellent indoor air quality. - Balcony & Amenity Design:
Projecting balconies were fitted with side screens and absorbent soffits to improve outdoor amenity value for residents, even in higher noise environments.
Results
- All dwellings achieved the target internal noise levels outlined in BS 8233:2014 and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham’s planning policy. Engaging an acoustic consultant was crucial for Hammersmith compliance.
- Enhanced occupant comfort and futureproofing against increasing traffic flows.
- Planning approval achieved with strong support for the acoustic strategy.
